Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)
Presentation of Product
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is non-ionic water-soluble polymer, it is effective in thickening, bonding, emulsifying, dispersing, stabilizing and water preserving, forming film and providing protective colloid effect in such industries like architectural coating, petroleum and daily-use chemicals. Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is very easily soluble not only in cold water, but also in hot water, and can provide solutions with wider range of viscosity.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is made from natural polymer cellulose, is non-ionic water-soluble polymer, it is yellowish or white, odorless and tasteless powdered solid.

Product applications
Latex paint
HEC is the most commonly used thickener in Latex painting. In addition to thickening to the latex paint, it has functions of emulsifying, dispersing, stabilizing and water-retaining. It is characterized by the significant thickening effect, excellent color development, film forming and storage stability. It is nonionic cellulose ether which can be used in a wide range of pH values. It has good compatibility with other material, such as pigment, auxiliaries, fillers and salts, good workability and leveling performance. Application methods including brushing, rolling and spraying could be used. It has good workability and leveling effect. Having been applied, it is not easy to drip, sag or spatter.

Oil drilling
In oil drilling industry, high-viscosity HEC is mainly used as thickener in completion and finishing fluid; while low-viscosity HEC is mainly used as water loss controller. HEC used as thickener will impart good mobility and stability to various slurries necessary for drilling, completion, cementing and fracturing operations. In drilling, HEC can increase the sand carrying capability of slurry and extend the service life of drill bits. In low-solid content completion fluid and cementing fluid, the excellent water loss control performance of HEC can prevent large amount of water in the slurry from entering into the oil reservoir, thus increasing the reservoir production capability.

Daily-use chemical industry
In shampoo, hair spray, neutralizer, conditioner and cosmetics, HEC is an effective film former, binder, thickener, stabilizer and disperser. In powder detergent, it is a dirt anti-deposition agent. The detergent containing HEC has the unique feature of improving smoothness and silkiness of the fabrics. HEC is applied as binder and film-former in recycling of tobacco.

Macromolecule polymerization
HEC has the functions of dispersing, emulsifying, suspending and stabilizing in the synthetic resin and can be used as protective colloid. It is characterized by its high dispersing ability, thin film, fine, uniform and loose granularity of product particles and good flowability, high transparency and easy workability of the product solution. It is readily soluble in both cold and hot water without gelatinizing, thus being more fit for various polymerization reactions.
As a dispersing agent, of which the important aspects include surface (or interfacial) tension, interfacial strength, and gelling temperature, HEC is suitable for polymerization or copolymerization of synthetic resins in all of the above aspects.
HEC is compatible with other water-soluble cellulose ethers and PVA, forming a composite system combing advantages and offsetting disadvantages of each component. Production of resin through the composite system is of high quality, meanwhile less loss of materials.

Construction
Used in construction formulations such as concrete mixture, fresh mortar, gypsum plaster or clay, HEC acts as a water retaining agent during applying prior to solidifying of these compositions. Beside improving the water retention of construction formulations, HEC could also extend the open and trowelling time of plaster or clay and reduce occurrence of crusting, slipping and sagging, thus improving the workability and efficiency and saving time, and meanwhile, raising the compatibilization rate of plaster, thus saving raw materials.

Agriculture
HEC can be used in pesticide emulsion and suspension formulations as thickener of sprayed emulsion or suspension. It helps bind the pesticide firmly on the foliage, thereby reducing the drift of pesticide and increasing the spray effect. HEC is also applied as a film-forming agent in seed coating agent.

Paper and Printing Ink
HEC can be used as surface sizing agent for paper and paper board and thickener and suspending agent for water-based printing ink.
During the process of paper-making, HEC has excellent properties including compatibility with most gums, resins and inorganic salts, less foam, less oxygen consumption and forming smooth surface film, which is of low surface permeability and improved gloss and can reduce cost. The paper sized with HEC can be used for printing high quality picture.
In manufacturing water-based printing ink, the ink thickened with HEC is characterized by quick drying, good color dispersion without adhesion.

Fabrics
HEC can be used as binder and sizing agent in fabric dyeing and printing paste and latex paint, thickener in carpet back sizing material, shape-forming agent and adhesive in glass fiber, finishing agent and binder in leather paste. It provides wide range of viscosities for these coatings and adhesives so as to bind the coating layer uniformly and quickly and improve the definition for printing and dyeing.

Ceramics
HEC can be used for preparing high-strength binder for ceramics.

Toothpaste
HEC can be used as thickener in toothpaste.
